Shopping for your wedding gown is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and probably something you’ve been dreaming of since you were a little girl. There are so many different types of gowns to choose from, and this can be extremely overwhelming for some brides-to-be. Follow these seven tips on how to find your dream wedding gown.
In order to find your dream wedding gown, you will need to know the location of your ceremony. For example, if you’re having a beach ceremony, you may want to rule out ball gowns with dramatic trains. These types of gowns will only get in the way during a beach ceremony. Aiming for a cathedral ceremony? Skip the short gowns and anything that looks like it may be worn to a cocktail party.
It’s important to determine your budget before you even go searching for your dream wedding gown. Know your budget and inform the salesperson before she begins bringing out dresses for you to try on. Remember, wedding attire usually accounts for anywhere between 10-15 percent of the overall wedding cost.
- The Earlier the Better
Begin shopping for your wedding gown anywhere between six to nine months prior to the big day. It usually takes about four months for a manufacturer to make a dress. Don’t forget, it takes another two months or so for alterations to be completed.
When you go to try on gowns, make sure you bring any additional accessories you plan to wear on the big day. Bring the jewelry, strapless bra, and even the shoes you plan to wear with the wedding gown. This will help you determine which gowns look good with the accessories you already have planned to wear. Also, never fear bringing a trusted confidant with you when you’re trying on gowns. Make sure you bring someone who knows your taste and whose judgement you trust.
- Be Open-Minded
Bridal consultants know their business! While you should never base your choice of a wedding gown solely on your consultant’s opinion, you may want to take their suggestions into consideration. After all, they know which type of gowns look best on which type of bodies. Some gowns look amazing on a hanger but won’t do much justice on your actual body.
- Fit Not Size
Bridal gowns usually run small. With this in mind, you need to forget the actual size number, and focus more so on finding a gown that fits you well now. If you do want to lose weight before your wedding day, you can easily have your gown tailored and taken in. A gown is cheaper to take in than it is to let out.
- Snap Pictures
Have a trusted friend of relative take pictures of you while in each gown. Save these pictures and look through them while you’re thinking about which dress to pick. Pictures can help so much because you can visually see how each dress looks on your body without having to try it on again. However, make sure to ask your bridal consultant if snapping pics is OK. Some bridal boutiques do not allow for photography.
